Bachata, reggaeton and salsa workshop Sat. 25th April
In response to several suggestions about higher level classes for
the salsa community in Aberdeen, La Rumba Latina
& Latin Explosion will be running a number of monthly workshops for those who want to improve their style and
technique, taking the dance more serious with all the fun involved. The workshops will
be led by professional, qualified teachers with many years of experience
dancing and performing salsa around the world.
This is
another great workshop not to be missed! This time focusing on the contagious
Dominican rhythms of bachata and merengue.
The teachers:
Alex, a resident instructor at El Barrio in
Edinburgh will be guiding you through the most up
to date routines of these two rhythms as well as leading the salsa class.
Lili, one of
our regular teachers will be assisting Alex. Lili was born in Havana, Cuba. Graduated from the
national school of art in ballet, folk, rumba, cha-cha-cha, contemporary
international dances & music. Worked for more than 5 years in
Television, all round the world for the ballet company in Cuba.
The Workshop:
The workshop will be divided in three classes, lasting a total of around 4
hours (including breaks for food and drinks available from the upper bar). It
will consist of:
Bachata (1hr)
The dance is a four-step beat achieved with a walking Cuban hip motion and a unique "pop". The dance is performed both in open position
and in closed position depending on the setting and mood of the partners. Techniquely, learning bachata helps mostly with the whole body
movement and music interpretation. However, practically it is a very pleasurable dance, easy, romantic and fun.
In Latin America when people dance, they mix all styles of dancing and the music is what the body moves to. Bachata is just kicking off in
the UK but is already one of the main styles danced in the rest of Europe.
1st Break (15 mins)
Reggaeton (1hr)
Reggaeton is a form of urban music that became popular with Latin American youth in the early 1990s. After its mainstream exposure in 2004,
it spread to North American, European and Asian audiences. Originating in Panama, reggaeton blends West-Indian music influences of reggae
and dancehall with those of Latin America, such as bomba, salsa, merengue, latin pop, cumbia and bachata as well as that of hip hop, and
contemporary R&B.
Like most street dances, with reggaeton the body has undergone experimenting with music and movement. It has developed into moving all
of the body to the music in different directions and different rhythms but all at the same time. It is the master of isolation (our body popping
equivalent).
Reggaeton for ladies (with Lili)
As part of this class, Lili has prepared a choreography of reggaeton full of ladies styling. Loads of femininity and relaxed movements are
incorporated. Reggaeton for ladies should not only help you with the stiffness in the hips and back, but the body also tends to respond to
these movements in a stimulating and re-energising way.
Men Reggaeton styling (with Alex)
This class will be a full body workout as well as extremely fun and liberating.
Both Lili and Alex will break down this dance into a simple choreography, so that by the end of the class you are able to understand why
it has caused such an impact in the Latin dance culture since its introduction.
